Many opportunities to boost tuna exports to Russia

(vasep.com.vn)

In the current context, Russia is considered a favorable and promising market for Vietnamese tuna exporters to expand their business. Vietnam’s tuna export turnover to Russia is steadily increasing.

Growing Demand for Tuna Imports

According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s tuna export turnover to Russia in 2024 reached nearly USD 45 million, a fivefold increase compared to 2020, marking the highest level in the past decade. In just the first three months of 2025, tuna exports to Russia exceeded USD 10 million, up 15% compared to the same period in 2024.

According to trade counselors, current economic and trade relations between Vietnam and Russia are favorable, offering numerous opportunities for cooperation. The two economies are complementary: Vietnam has demand for Russian goods for production and consumption, while Russia imports tropical agricultural products, seafood, and foodstuffs from Vietnam.

Furthermore, Russia is among the top 30 tuna-importing countries globally. Its tuna import value has doubled over the past five years, reaching nearly USD 90 million in 2023, and continues to rise annually.

Strong Potential for Export Growth

Export Activities Benefiting from Favorable Conditions

Several major obstacles to bilateral trade—such as transportation, payment, and business travel—have recently been actively addressed.

Goods exported from Vietnam to Russia can now be shipped via direct maritime routes between Vladivostok and Hai Phong or Ho Chi Minh City, with a transit time of approximately 8–11 days. Alternatively, they can be transported via international rail from Vietnam through China and Kazakhstan to Moscow, taking around 35–40 days.

In terms of payment, businesses from both countries can transact in rubles and Vietnamese dong, which greatly facilitates bilateral trade. Additionally, Russia now offers e-visas for Vietnamese citizens, allowing a 15-day stay, which simplifies business travel for traders.

Moreover, Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)—of which Russia is a member—signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2015, which took effect in October 2016. As a result, most goods traded between the two countries now enjoy 0% or very low import tariffs. Enterprises in both countries are encouraged to take full advantage of the FTA to boost trade and investment.

However, to export goods to Russia sustainably and avoid disputes related to quality, trade counselors advise that Vietnamese enterprises should thoroughly study and strictly comply with Russia’s regulations on product quality, packaging, and labeling.
